Roy B. Cohn: Compliance training video wins top media awards

The innovative training video that I produced with Richard Bistrong and Mastercard has won three top awards, recognizing production quality and excellence in storytelling.

“Behind the Bribe” was chosen from among 12,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents to win two Silver Telly Awards — one for Employee Communications and the other for Training for Corporate Use. The Telly Awards annually showcase the best work in television and video.

“Behind the Bribe” — probably already familiar to most readers of the FCPA Blog — also received a Communicator Award of Excellence for Training for Corporate Use, from among 6,000 entries. The Communicator Awards are the leading international awards program in marketing and communications.

I was the creative director for the video. The project began with numerous brainstorming sessions with Richard and the Mastercard team. Our goal was to find the best way to tell Richard’s story as a former FCPA violator and FBI and UK cooperator.

Keith Slotter, the former Chief of the FBI’s Global Financial Crimes Program, narrates “Behind the Bribe.” He follows Richard’s story through criminal sentencing, with lessons learned for compliance leaders and business people.

We decided to tell the story through a real-life approach — a mix of interviews, expert perspective, and dramatic reenactments. We used actual settings for some scenes, and transcripts from Richard’s criminal sentencing for one of the final scenes.

The approach worked. Not only has the eleven-minute “Behind the Bribe” now been recognized by media industry leaders, it has also reached a huge and growing audience. It has been subtitled into 10 languages and provided 44,000 minutes of training. Clients include companies headquartered in Switzerland, Japan, Brazil, the United States, Bermuda, the United Kingdom, and others.

“Behind the Bribe,” produced in cooperation with Mastercard, was released in 2017. To request a demo of the full eleven-minute video or a licensing fee schedule, please click here.
