George Clooney on South Sudan: War crimes shouldn’t pay

FCPA Today reported Wednesday that George Clooney’s anti-corruption initiative called The Sentry released a report about war profiteering and kleptocracy in South Sudan.

Here’s the item:

Hollywood actor George Clooney presented a report in Washington, D.C. following a two-year investigation that alleges South Sudan President Salva Kiir is directly profiting from the country’s brutal civil war. According to the report, Kiir and his top officials have accumulated multimillion-dollar mansions, cars, and overseas businesses. Kiir’s 12 year-old son holds a 25% stake in a holding company formed earlier this year.

One of Kiir’s associates, Lawrence Lual Malong Jr, 28, refers to himself as “Young Tycoon” when posting images of himself on social media with private jets and soldiers fighting in the civil war.

Clooney’s group tracks and analyzes “how armed conflict and atrocities are financed, sustained, and monetized.” It hopes to mobilize civil society groups and influence policy makers.

“The Sentry uses open source data collection, field research, and state-of-the-art network data analysis technology, and works in partnership with local and international civil society organizations, journalists, and governments,” according to its website.
