Adding on to the conversation about teaching compliance to law students, here is what we’re doing in Minneapolis/St. Paul at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
This fall (2014) we launched LL.M. and master’s programs in organizational ethics and compliance and also offer a compliance concentration for our J.D. students. The driver was the same as others have mentioned — hearing from colleagues in business, banking and health care that there was a real gap in the knowledge compliance officers had coming into their companies.
Together with a board of advisors from organizations like Robins, Kaplan Miller & Ciresi, UnitedHealth Group, Cargill, General Mills, St. Jude Medical, Wells Fargo and others, we developed programs that will prepare UST graduates to excel in compliance roles and make a great impact on business and industry, with the goal to grow into being a national leader in graduate-level compliance education.
We are fortunate to have 13 highly motivated students in our inaugural class, with high hopes they will go on to make significant contributions in whatever work they choose to do.
More Information about the programs is here.
Full disclosure: I am on the UST Law School board of advisors representing Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi.
