A golden wash basin, a statue of Chairman Mao Zedong, and boxes of high-end Moutai liquor have been found on property owned by Gu Junshan, providing a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the former People’s Liberation Army (PLA) general who’s now under investigation.
Reports in Caixin allege that a police raid on Gu’s Puyang City villa a year ago led to the confiscation of four truckloads of luxury items. According to the report, Gu owned dozens of properties in Beijing and Puyang, some of which he allegedly planned to give as gifts.
He also sought kickbacks from real estate developers in the sales of military-owned land while he was in charge of the military’s construction projects.
According to Caixin, Gu climbed the ranks of the military by forging links with senior officials and paying bribes. He also traded state-controlled goods such as steel, lumber and oil to enrich himself.
Police have also raided the homes of Gu’s younger brother, Gu Xianjun. Xianjun, who runs factories producing military supplies, was arrested for corruption last year. Gu’s secretary, Qiao Xijun, has also been arrested.
According to reports, Gu has been under investigation since February 2012, but no official announcement has been made.
A special investigative team has been stationed in Gu’s hometown to collect evidence from enterprises belonging to Gu and other government officials.
