Global Contagion Report: SKKMigas

Country: Indonesia

Company Involved: Kernel Oil Pte Ltd

Industry: Oil and Gas

Public Official: Rudi Rubiandini, Chairman of Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force Team (SKKMigas)

Enforcement Action: Trial

Summary: A director of Singapore-based trading firm Kernel Oil, Simon Gunawan Tanjaya, has gone on trial in Indonesia for allegedly bribing the former head of oil and gas regulator SKKMigas. The bribes allegedly went to Rudi Rubiandini. Prosecutors said more than a million dollars in cash was passed via a golf trainer and alleged middleman, Deviardi. Tanjaya and fellow Kernel director Widodo Ratanachaitong allegedly used the bribes to win favors from the national oil and gas regulator.

Tanjaya admitted through an attorney that Kernel paid bribes to Rubiandini.

Rubiandini is also on trial in connection with at least six tenders he handled for oil sales by SKKMigas. His trial has included evidence of his involvement in numerous other graft cases.
