David Barstow of the New York Times described to Democracy Now how Wal-Mart de Mexico allegedly used massive corruption to win approvals for new stores, and how top executives at Wal-Mart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas learned about the brazen graft but covered it up.
Barstow and Alejandra Xanic von Bertrab won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking the story.
Their initial report about Wal-Mart appeared in April last year.
Here’s what they uncovered, as told by Barstow. The clip was posted in December but hasn’t been widely viewed. Barstow appears about two minutes in.
