Summary: Mark Ciavarella Jr. was sentenced to 28 years and fined $1.2 million for funnelling underage defendants into two private juvenile detention centers in exchange for kickbacks and bribes from the centers’ builder and co-owner. Michael Conahan has also been implicated in the case. In light of the charges against Ciavarella, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned about 4,000 of his verdicts against defendants as young as ten.
