From Nepal, writer Shiva Aryal said:
‘Corruption has badly affected our economic growth. . . More than 40 percent of the Nepali people are illiterate. Illiteracy prevents them from acting wisely. They are exploited by others as they don’t have the knowledge to claim and use their rights. . . . Others fear something bad happening to their career and personal relationship if they point a finger at corrupt officials. The rest of them argue that government salaries aren’t adequate, so there is corruption. Although we know about corruption, no specific action against it has been taken. . . . The cause of our backwardness is misuse of money, not a dearth of it.’
