China’s Top 5 Mistress Scandals

We’ve ranked the five most memorable recent China scandals combining corruption and mistresses.

1)   WANG SHOUYE

Former deputy commander of the Chinese navy. Sentenced to death (with two years reprieve) in 2006 for corruption involving $25.6 million. Wang was exposed by three of his mistresses within a two-year period.

2)   DUAN YIHE

Former Party chief of Jinan City (Shandong Province). Executed in 2007 for blowing up his mistress with a car bomb after growing tired of her constant money demands. He was also charged with corruption after authorities found that a huge amount of his assets came from untraceable sources.

3)   LIU ZHIHUA

Former Beijing vice mayor. Sentenced to death (with two years reprieve) in 2008 for corruption involving $1.12 million after being exposed by his mistress. A sex video showing Liu and the mistress was used as evidence against him.

Another of Liu’s mistresses wrote a magazine article about her dalliance with the official. Excerpt: “He is dark and not handsome. I was even more disgusted with the fact that he stared at me leeringly the moment he saw me.”

4)   PANG JIAYU

Former Shaanxi Province CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee) vice chairman. After 11 mistresses gave evidence against him, Pang was sentenced to 12 years for abusing his power and serious misconduct.

5)   WANG JIPING

Former Beijing Taxation Bureau director. Brought down by the mistress of one of his subordinates. In May 2012, Wang was sentenced to death (with two years reprieve) for corruption involving $2.37 million. Wang was said to have awarded projects to his own mistress Zhao Yun.
