Trial of anti-graft bloggers opens in Vietnam

Three bloggers who reported about alleged corruption in Vietnam are on trial for spreading propaganda against the state.

Nguyen Van Hai, Phan Thanh Hai, and Ta Phong Tan face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. They wrote about scandals involving high-profile businessmen with ties to the ruling communist party.

Their trial opened today.

The Telegraph reported that ‘Mr Nguyen, who blogs under the name Dieu Cay, has been in prison since 2008, while Mr Phan and Ms Ta were detained in 2010 and 2011 respectively. No one has ever been acquitted of the charges they face.’

The mother of defendant Ta set herself on fire in July to protest harassment of her daughter and family. She died of her injuries.
