In Foshan City (Guangdong Province), Shengjian Engineering Supervision Co Ltd owner Qiu Huiqiang was charged in court with spending more than $156,000 from 1999-2011 to bribe civil servants from the Foshan Roads Authority, Traffic Investment Management Department and Traffic Development Construction Center in order to secure contracts for traffic project supervision. http://news.gd.sina.com.cn/news/20120808/1339637.html

Taiwan ruling party Kuomintang’s Changhua County Council member Lai Ping-huei is reportedly on the run after appeal against his 16-year jail sentence for corruption  was rejected by the Taiwan Supreme Court. Seven individuals in Beilun District (Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province) have recently been detained by the police for alleged involvement in a $313,000 commercial corruption case. One of them identified as Li, representing a Shanghai company supplying dyes, had been found guilty of bribing staff of 18 textile and clothing companies within the district to secure purchasing contracts. Former Ningbo Public Security Bureau deputy Party secretary and deputy director He Fuchang was handed a suspended death sentence, and stripped of all political rights and assets for accepting bribes amounting to more than $2.5 million while holding various positions from 2000-2011, including Yuyao City (Zhejiang Province) mayor and party secretary. http://news.sina.com.cn/c/2012-08-10/180124946442.shtml

Former Sanya Haitangwan Town mayor Li Ji was given a suspended death sentence, and stripped of all political rights and assets for accepting bribes amounting to $2.26 million to award contracts in the town to various developers. Chenzhou City official Peng Zongyu went from hero to zero last week when he was convicted of embezzling money that was meant to help victims of a 2008 snowstorm. At the time of the storm, Peng was commended for his disaster-relief efforts in the city.
