In China, Massive Police Sweep For Fake Drugs

China’s public security ministry announced over the weekend that police had detained nearly 2,000 individuals in a sweeping late-July raid on manufacturers of counterfeit drugs.

Fake drug stockpiles worth more than $180 million were seized, including impostor meds for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer.

According to the ministry’s report, the counterfeit drugs likely contained toxic substances and are suspected to have caused consumers to suffer liver and kidney damage.

More than 18,000 police were involved in the recent crackdown, which authorities say resulted in the destruction of more than 1,100 counterfeit-drug-making facilities.
