More Countries Debate Antibribery Laws

Following the lead from China and Russia, both Indonesia and India are working on their own versions of the FCPA and Bribery Act.

Last week the Indian government introduced a bill that will criminalize bribing foreign officials.

The new bill also allows India to provide assistance to a foreign country and sign reciprocal arrangements for extradition of accused persons.

Penalties for conviction would include up to seven years in prison.

Earlier this month, Indonesia’s attorney general proposed a law that would ban foreign bribery in both the public and private sector.

India and Indonesia need to enact the new laws to come into compliance with the U.N. Convention against Corruption, which both have signed.

A WSJ story by Joe Palazzolo about Indonesia’s new law is here, and an article from sify.com about India’s law is here.
