We enjoyed the discussion here this week about human rights. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act makes more sense when you remember to look at it through the eyes of the victims of public graft. On the other hand, when the FCPA becomes a mere compliance process, you can begin to wonder what the fuss is all about.

Sales of Bribery Abroad actually blipped on Black Friday, as though it was on holiday gift lists.

Our faces might not be familiar to each other. But there’s a strong bond among the members of the compliance community, whether we’re from service firms, industry, government, academia, the press or elsewhere. The idea that people from so many places and backgrounds care so deeply about the rule of law is always encouraging.

Today we’ll be saying our final farewells to a wonderful man. His credo was simple: Be nice to people. It wasn’t something he had to work at or remind himself to do. It was who he was — all the time. So he had no regrets along the way and every day was something special for him. We’re thankful for his long and well-lived life, and for showing us what’s truly important. Rest in peace, Dad.
